7th Switzerland-Japan Workshop on Biomechanics (SJB2027)

We are pleased to announce that the 7th Switzerland-Japan Workshop on Biomechanics (SJB2027) will be held onsite from 14 to 17 September, 2027 in Stoos, Switzerland.

This workshop takes place every four years, alternating between Japan and Switzerland, offering excellent opportunities for biomechanics researchers and students from both countries to share their cutting-edge research and foster mutual friendships.

SJB2027 will cover a broad range of topics in biomechanics ranging from basic research to clinical applications. We anticipate an exciting program with oral and poster presentations, an excursion, and opportunities to (re-)connect with colleagues and friends.

On behalf of the organizing committee, we are pleased to welcome you to the 7th Switzerland–Japan Workshop on Biomechanics in the Swiss Alps. This workshop continues a long-standing and productive collaboration between Switzerland and Japan. For over a quarter of a century, this series has provided a vibrant platform for scientists and students to exchange advanced knowledge related to biomechanics with a focus on interdisciplinary dialogue and bilateral cooperation. Building on the success of the previous meetings, alternately organized in Switzerland and Japan, the workshop will bring together engineers and clinicians for fruitful scientific exchange.

Biomechanics continues to play a significant role in addressing fundamental challenges in medicine of the 21st century. The breadth of topics covered in this workshop reflects the disciplinary diversity and ongoing development of the field. In addition to academic exchange, the workshop offers valuable opportunities to foster collaborations and deepen mutual understanding within our community.

We anticipate an engaging mix of oral and poster presentations, along with numerous opportunities to exchange ideas and (re-)connect with colleagues and friends. We very much look forward to welcoming you and sharing this occasion together.

Travel to venue: Since 2017, the world’s steepest funicular has been running from Schwyz to the heart of the mountain village of Stoos. The funicular reaches a maximum gradient of 110% = 47 degrees. The travel time is five to seven minutes. Each of the four cabins has a capacity of 34 persons. Since 2022, the mountain station, the Stoos Shop, and the Stoos Lodge have been heated using the heat from the engine room of the Schwyz–Stoos funicular. The heating water of the Stoos Lodge is heated with the regenerative braking energy of the Schwyz–Stoos funicular.

Surrounding:

The 300-year-old Maria Hilf Chapel and lots of nature with breathtaking views can be found around Stoos. Ten lakes and countless peaks can be admired on the ridge walk from the Klingenstock to the Fronalpstock.

Past workshops:

The 1st workshop was held at Les Diablerets, Switzerland in 2001, led by Jean-Jacques Meister (EPFL) and by Kozaburo Hayashi (Osaka University). It was followed by the 2nd in Kyoto in 2005, the 3rd in Engelberg in 2009, the 4th in Shima in 2014, the 5th in Zermatt in 2017 and the 6th in Hokkaido in 2023.
